Behind the Scenes: Spring ’13 Photo Shoot
Here at Timberland, we love our snow. Nothing is better than the white stuff. But even I have to admit that this year I couldn’t be more excited for the warming temps!
Spring is all about having fun in the sand, sun, and water. When it came time for our Spring 2013 photo shoot, we kept this spirit in mind and traveled to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

For over a century, MV has been one of the most popular summer destinations on the east coast- and we definitely aren’t surprised. There is something for every warm weather traveler. Not only does it have some of the best beaches in the country, but it is also home to lakes, miles of trails to explore, and authentic boat builder workshops.
We found lots of interesting landscapes to act as a back drop to our colorful Spring 2013 product (where better to shoot a boat shoe then on an actual sailboat?). Plus, we actually got to meet some of the boat builders who crafted our ship the old fashioned way – how cool is that?

Be sure to check out the results of our trip! Our MV photos are all at womens.timberland.com
The Boys of Summer and Their Favorite Shoes
They’re already pushing Halloween candy in the grocery store, which means we haven’t got much time left to talk about summer shoes (at least not without looking pitifully behind the times). Without further ado, here are a few of our favorite Timberland men, sharing their picks for Best Footwear of Summer 2012:
For his weekend escapes, Jan from our Belgium sales team loves the Earthkeepers Radler Approach: “I load up the van and drive to Wallonie, ‘the deep south of Belgium,’ for some hiking, camping and even a little rock climbing—and Radler can do it all.”

Italian sales planner Diego favors the Formentor boat shoe – and not just for sailing: “The second you put them on, you feel ready for anything. They’re really lightweight, super comfortable and now they’re my top pick for every day.”

Look and feel helped to make the Earthkeepers Hookset Handcrafted chukka a favorite for senior product manager Troy: ” They look great and are easier on the environment. I love the way the organic canvas feels. Plus, they’re really comfortable and flexible.”

Setting Sail for London
In a few short weeks, all eyes will be on London as athletes from across the globe gather to compete in the world’s foremost sports competition. The Royal Spanish Sailing Federation will be among them — and along with Timberland Formentor boat shoes and gear, we’re sending them off with our very best wishes for fair winds, calm seas, and good grip.
Go get ‘em, team.
“You Need to Respect the Sea, Not Fear It”
Words of wisdom from 31-year old Ivan Pastor, a member of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. Timberland is proud to be the official sponsor of Ivan and his teammates, as they set their sights on summer in London.

Ivan Pastor
We recently caught up with Ivan on dry land and learned a little more about this world-champion sailor:
Started young: Ivan started sailing when he was just 8 years old.
Not superstitious: He doesn’t follow any sort of pre-competition “good luck” ritual, but he does like to take his time getting his equipment ready.
Pretty passionate about the water: If he weren’t a sailor, Ivan would be a professional surfer.
Has a favorite sailing spot: He loves the Isle of the Pines in New Caledonia – an incredible place to sail.
Appreciates good grip: This is the most important feature in footwear for sailing, according to Ivan. Good thing he’s wearing our Formentor boat shoes with Gripstick rubber!
Has no fear: When asked for a story about a time when he was scared at sea, Ivan says, “I have some anecdotes, but none about being scared. You need to respect the sea, not fear it.”
Respecting the sea seems to be paying off for Ivan and his Spanish Sailing Federation teammates; they’re having an incredible season, and we’re proud to be a part of it. Stay tuned for progress updates as the team sails toward London!
If you think Ivan’s an interesting guy, you might also like to learn more about his teammates on our men’s site. And if you appreciate good grip as much as our Spanish sailors do, check out our entire collection of Formentor boat shoes.
Timberland Women Play Favorites
We all know it isn’t nice to play favorites — but nice or not, the truth is that most of us do have a pair (or two) of shoes or boots that get more than their fair share of love and attention.
Even here at Timberland — where we’re surrounded by footwear made to look good, feel good and perform well — we’ve got our own personal can’t-resist picks:
Marketing associate Gillian has a soft spot for the Earthkeepers Deering Boat Ballerina because, ” It’s a trendy looking cross between a boat shoe and a ballerina, with a touch of casual ruggedness—perfect for any outfit, any day of the week.”
Our senior retail marketing manager Rachel has found a perfect travel companion in the Timberland Boot Company Marge Wood Heel Sandal. “For someone like me that travels a lot, this is the pair I’m going to pack first this season. Handcrafted details, great heel height and a back strap so I can run to catch my next flight—it’s perfect!”
The members of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation aren’t the only ones who covet our Formentor boat shoe. Women’s product manager Andrea says, “When I race sailboats, I’m often on the foredeck—by far the most unstable and slippery part of the boat. That’s why I absolutely need to make sure my shoes are really made for performance sailing with the best traction imaginable.”
And senior designer Penelope loves the versatility of the Earthkeepers Nevali Peep Toe: “Because it’s a peep toe, it works in warm and cooler temperatures —so it has a longer season in my wardrobe. It works with skirts, dresses and jeans.”

10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation
Every four years the greatest sailors in the world compete for glory – and this year, Timberland is going along for the sail as the sponsor of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. Between races, we sat down with three members of the team so we could get to know them a little better:

Onan Barreiros
1. The most incredible place Onan Barreiros has ever sailed is the Bahamas.
2. If he wasn’t sailing, Onan would be playing football.
3. His second favorite outdoor activity is road biking.

Federico Alonso
4. Federico Alonso isn’t superstitious, but he always sails the day before a championship starts.
5. If Federico had to give his boat a name, it would be Miura (that’s what he called his first wooden boat).
6. Even sailors get seasick. He’s been sick on a boat and knows it’s a pretty nasty feeling!

Aaron Sarmiento
7. When Aaron Sarmiento isn’t on the water, he likes to bike, run and play tennis.
8. If Aaron wasn’t a sailor, he’d like to be a professor.
9. He started sailing when he was 11 years old!
And the #10 thing you might not know about the Spanish sailors is that they all consider good grip one of the most essential features in their footwear. It’s a good thing they’re wearing Timberland Formentor boat shoes with Gripstick rubber to keep them on deck and on course.
The Royal Spanish Sailing Federation knows the no. 1 rule to looking good on a boat (and winning the race) is staying on the boat. Follow in their slip-free footsteps and get your own pair of Formentors by shopping our boat shoe collection.
Get a Grip With Formentor Bags
You might expect superior traction and stability when you’re wearing Timberland’s Formentor boat shoes made with Gripstick technology … but did you know we use the same Gripstick technology in our Formentor bag collection? It’s our way of making sure your gear stays as safe and dry as you do.
Our Formentor bags are made with lightweight, durable synthetics and feature waterproof zippers and polyurethane-coated plastic hardware for superior grip in wet or dry conditions. These bags get their own treatment of Gripstick technology in the form of non-marking rubber feet, which protect the bags (and their contents) from the ground and reduce tipping and slipping.
Our Formentor Waterproof Tote Bag is ready to go to the beach or boat, and its water-resistant detachable pouch is perfect for carrying small essentials:
For not-so-small essentials, our Formentor Waterproof Duffle Bag offers protection from the elements in streamlined style:
Need a bag that’s as changeable as the summer weather? Check out our Formentor Waterproof 4-in-1. Depending on how you configure the straps, it can be used as a pack, duffle, tote or sling, making it the perfect go-to bag for any warm-weather adventure:
