Calling All Designers: Do You Have an Award-Winning Handbag?

If so, take note:  The HBDNetwork cordially invites you to compete in the 7th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards — the only handbag competition of its kind in the world. Submit your handbag and compete for one of nine awards in handbag excellence, international recognition and a variety of fabulous prizes.

As in past years, Timberland is proud to sponsor the Best Green Handbag — awarded to the best handbag made of sustainable, recycled or organic materials and completely recyclable at the end of its life.  As a brand that’s passionate about design and protecting the environment, we’re always excited to see the beautiful green bag submission!

Fiona Kempton's beautiful bag won our "Best Green" award last year.

Other 2013 award categories include Best Student-Made Handbag, Best Handbag in Overall Style and Design and the ever-popular Audience Fan Favorite Handbag.  To see a complete list of award categories, submission requirements and details on what each winner will receive, go to the 2013 IHDA website.  Ready to submit your design?  Enter here!

Kempton Carryall Wins Top Prize!

At last night’s Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA), designer Fiona Kempton of Kempton & Co. was announced the winner of the “Best Green Handbag” design.  Among the recycled and reclaimed materials used in this gorgeous bag are an old flour sack, scraps of leather and reclaimed hardware from 3 old bags from the Salvation Army!

We were excited to co-sponsored the “Best Green Handbag” category this year alongside Amorim Cork, the biggest world producer of natural cork products and a global leader in sustainable business practices. This marks Timberland’s third year sponsoring the Awards; as a company that’s rooted in the outdoors and committed to environmental stewardship, we’re got a natural affinity for green goods!

Through artful, handcrafted design using an eclectic collection of reclaimed materials, Fiona pays tribute to our most delicate resources.  She has created a bag that combines sustainability with style, embodying her dedication to preservation – all values that are aligned with Timberland’s eco-conscious philosophies. Much like our Earthkeepers® collection, the result is a fashion-forward design that consumers will love – and feel good about.

A selection of Kempton & Co. designs will be sold for a limited time at select Timberland stores in the coming months. In addition, Kempton will be designing and producing a limited run of Timberland-inspired handbags featuring Amorim Cork that will be available for sale at select Timberland stores in the fall.

Cast Your Vote for Best Bag

Designers all over the world have submitted their entries for the 6th annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA), presented by InStyle and Handbag Designer 101.  The only handbag competition of its kind in the world, the IHDA recognizes handbag excellence in nine categories, including Best Green Handbag – an IHDA award Timberland is proud to sponsor, along with Amorim Cork, for the third year in a row.  Timberland strives to use recycled, renewable and organic materials in our own products, and we’re happy to recognize and support handbag designers who share our love of green!

Meet the fabulous finalists in the Best Green Handbag category:

Now it’s your turn: one of the handbag awards will go to the Audience Fan Favorite – the handbag design that receives the most audience votes.  Just click through to the Audience Fan Favorite voting page and cast your vote for the bag you love best (one that’s made of recycled and sustainable materials, maybe?).

All of the winning designers and their handbags will be announced at the IHDA awards ceremony on June 13th.  Stay tuned – we’ll be sharing photos from the ceremony and details about the Best Green Handbag winner here on the Bootmakers Blog.

Belinda Pasqua Wins Handbag Award

Australian-born designer Belinda Pasqua was named the winner of the “Best Green Handbag” design at the 2011 Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA) in New York City last night. For the second consecutive year, Timberland sponsored the “Best Green Handbag” category and helped to select the winning design.

Pasqua’s winning Marlo Tote was honored at the IHDA for its unique design, which merges repurposed premium leathers from scrap and excess tannery leather with traditional handwork and a modern silhouette.

Inspired by the Australian landscape she grew up admiring, Pasqua started The Sway collection of handbags to give women eco-conscious and beautiful design. Like all of Pasqua’s bags, the Marlo Tote features recycled cotton linings with her signature ‘Boomerang’ print inspired by Aboriginal art.  Her bags are available for purchase at www.theswaynyc.com, Fred Segal, Kaight NYC, Searle, and International Playground.

Timberland’s Jackie LaLime was on hand to present the award, and shared her thoughts about Belinda and her design:

Belinda’s love of nature and dedication to the environment shines through in her beautifully crafted designs, and aligns perfectly with Timberland’s values.  With the Marlo Tote, she has created a bag that combines detailed craftsmanship with sustainability and style, using leather pieces that would otherwise go to waste. The result is a green handbag that allows women to look great and feel great while wearing it.  It’s what green design is all about.

A selection of Pasqua’s designs will be on display for a limited time at the Timberland® store at 474 Broadway in New York City in the coming weeks.  In addition, Pasqua will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Timberland women’s footwear design team on a limited edition Earthkeepers™ handbag and boot collection, slated to come out in 2012.
