A Lesson in Happiness From Mountainfilm

When we weren’t gawking at the beautiful scenery or chatting with visitors at our Earthkeepers booth, those of us from Team Timberland who were lucky enough to go to Mountainfilm in Telluride last weekend enjoyed some of the inspiring speakers on Mountainfilm’s agenda.  A festival favorite was Dan Buettner, a record-setting endurance biker, author and explorer.

Dan Buettner

Dan wanted to understand why certain people in particular areas of the world lived longer, healthier and happier lives, so he traveled across the planet to get answers. The result is his best-selling book, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, which examines how people live and how lifestyle affects lifespan.

Here’s a bit of what Dan has learned about happiness through his travels and research:

If you want to be happier, get outdoors.

Access to nature is clearly associated with higher levels of happiness, lower BMI and even better eyesight. As a species, we spent 99 percent of our existence outdoors. That gives us an evolutionary clue for what we ought to be doing.

“Getting outdoors” doesn’t have to mean scaling a mountain or running a marathon.

I can tell you with near certainty that regular, low-intensity physical activity is much better for you than beating your body while engaging in ultra-endurance activities. Joints give out, cartilage erodes, we get injured. Experience something extreme, and then learn to like hiking. You’ll be happier and healthier in the long run.

If we want to lessen our environmental footprint and live healthier lives, we’ve got to step away from the gas tank.

If we tax the heck out of gasoline we’ll drive less, produce less carbon, walk more, bike more, get outside more and nearly eliminate the obesity epidemic.

As an outdoors brand, we’d have to agree with Dan — getting outdoors makes us pretty happy!  We’re proud to have been a sponsor of this year’s Mountainfilm in Telluride Festival, and grateful for the opportunity to meet incredible people like Dan while we were there.  To learn more about Timberland’s support of Mountainfilm, please visit our Festivals page.

May Means Mountainfilm

Colorado may be home to some of the best skiing in the states, but when the temperature warms and the snow melts, we love it for a whole different reason: Mountainfilm in Telluride.

To call Mountainfilm a film festival would be an understatement: it’s as much about the people that attend and the experiences they share as it is about the films that are shown.  Each year, activists, explorers and artists of all kinds congregate at Mountainfilm to examine environmental, cultural and social issues in a uniquely creative way — and to be moved and motivated to take their own action.

As a brand that appreciates creativity and is passionate about protecting the great outdoors, we’re excited to be the Official Footwear Sponsor of Mountainfilm in Telluride.  As part of our sponsorship, we’re going to be outfitting filmmakers and other Mountainfilm VIPs in our Earthkeepers footwear (made with recycled and environmentally-conscious materials), and encouraging festival-goers to be more eco-conscious in their own lives.  If you’re going to Mountainfilm, stop by the Timberland kiosk and make a pledge to reduce your environmental impact — we’ll plant a tree in your honor!

If you’re not traveling to Telluride, stay connected to all the best of what’s happening at Mountainfilm by visiting our Festivals page - we’ll be sharing stories, photos and videos from our experience there.
